This means you need about trees to absorb your emissions over a year.

What is Beiersdorf doing about this?

  • We have committed to reduce our CO2 emissions by 30% per product sold by 2020.*
  • We promote environmentally friendly travel through bike schemes and green car policies around the company.
  • Frequent business trips and long-haul flights release a lot of CO2. For this reason we increasingly use audio and video conferences instead whenever possible.

What can you do?

  • Change how you travel: save money by taking public transport, or save even more — and get fit — by cycling or walking to work.
  • If you need to take your car, drive in a way that reduces your CO2 emissions: accelerate gently, brake sensibly, and check your tyre pressures regularly.
  • If you do travel by car, consider sharing the ride with other people.

This means you consume enough water to fill bathtubs each year.*

What is Beiersdorf doing about this?

  • We used 30% less water and 24% less wastewater at our production facilities in 2013 than in 2005.
  • Our new plant in Mexico will use 20% less water than comparable factories.
  • We’ve modernized wastewater treatment systems and improved cleaning processes to reduce our water usage in sites around the world — from Brazil to Spain to Indonesia.

What can you do?

  • Find out how much water it takes to produce certain food — the facts may surprise you and you might want to make different choices in the future.
  • About 5 liters of water are needed to produce one liter of bottled water. If tap water is clean and potable, why not drink that instead?
  • Report any leaks you see in bathrooms, kitchens, or anywhere at all, so they can be fixed promptly.

*These results show your water footprint, which includes both direct and virtual water consumption (all the water used during the product lifecycle).

Enough sunlight falls on the earth's surface each minute to meet the world’s energy demand for an entire year.

  • Our ‘Blue Building’ program includes saving energy and conserving resources at the same time as providing an attractive and healthy working environment for all employees.
  • We expanded renewable energy usage. In Spain 480 solar modules provide about 170,000 kilowatt hours, almost 10% of the annual electricity needs.

What can you do?

If everyone living in New York City produced the same amount, they’d fill trucks with waste each year.**

What is Beiersdorf doing about this?

  • In 2013, we cut our waste volume by 36% at our production facilities, compared to 2005.
  • Where possible, we apply the sustainability criteria of 'avoid, reduce, reuse and recycle' to all of our packaging innovations.
  • Refill pouches have been available for various product categories since 1992. As a result waste volume can be reduced substantially. The refill pouches for our NIVEA Shower Gel results in 75% less waste.

What can you do?

  • Reduce and reuse paper. There are lots of easy ways to do this, like reading emails or documents on the screen, taking notes on scrap paper, and using mugs instead of paper cups.
  • Put rubbish — like cans, plastic bottles, cardboard, etc. — in the appropriate recycling bins. If these don’t exist, talk to your manager about putting them in place.
